Utopia european caffe12/21/2023 ![]() A MUST-HAVE for any serious visitor to the Amsterdam scene, it is the first book ever to profile all 168 coffeeshops in the city, with vivid full-color pictures, detailed descriptions, amenities, and locals/regulars recommendations for the "best of" shops in a variety of categories. This shop is featured in our 368 page Hardcover book CONNOISSEUR GUIDE: AMSTERDAM COFFEESHOPS. As always, we will continue to keep an eye out to see if they are able to maintain the high quality standards they have set thus far. The quality, particularly of their flower, has been exceptional thus far, warranting The Plug recognition as a connoisseur establishment. They also have pre-rolled joints, and edibles such as muffins and brownies. The hashish side of the menu is much smaller, but has a nice mix of imported and more potent domestic ice-hash (Nederhasj) varieties. They also have a high priced “Special” section for California imports. They carry many contemporary USA genetics too. On the weed-side, you may find as many as two dozen strains. The cannabis menu at The Plug coffeeshop is fairly large. In our experience the atmosphere at The Plug is relaxed, the music chill, and the shop clean and well-maintained. When the weather is nice, this can also be a great spot to chill, take in some sun and fresh air, and watch the local activity. Outside, one will also find a large white picnic table. While this shop can be a bit dark at night, it can be quite bright and open during the day. Large windows in the front allow ample light to enter. In the back is a large bar area for ordering cannabis products, as well as basic refreshments. Soft accent lighting provides a notable “posh pub or nightclub” feel to this coffeeshop, though it admittedly is too small to pack in a crowd. Grab a booth, and you will have ample room to spread out. Seating is in the form of large comfortable leather benches restaurant booth-style. The walls are dark with a modern pattern and texture. The décor has been updated quite a bit since changing ownership. The inside of The Plug has a long lounge area. As it was explained to us, the owner always wanted to have a coffeeshop in Amsterdam. Interestingly, the new owner also runs The Plug cannabis club in Barcelona, which is well known for its connoisseur products. For a long time it was known as Utopia, but changed hands in early 2018. This is one of the newest shops in Amsterdam, technically speaking. It is just a bit south of Centraal Station, towards the west side of the canal ring. I can’t wait to come back to try their other items. The Plug Coffeeshop is found on the busy street of Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal (“New Side Front Bastion Wall”). Overall, it was a lovely experience and I really enjoyed the ambiance. I would have liked a drizzle of honey too but most of the sugar I was getting from the meal was from the latte. I liked it a lot since it also had a swirl of preserves in it. It was tarter and less sweet than American yogurt. The menu advertised that the yogurt is a house recipe. My yogurt parfait came out later and it was beautifully adorned with fresh strawberries, blueberries, cinnamon, and granola. ![]() I wasn’t given a spoon so I didn’t get to stir it as I would have liked. The latte boasted of a white chocolate sauce which sadly sank to the bottom so it was not mixed when they poured the espresso and milk on top. ![]() My latte was brought out first and it was overflowing, yet decadently decorated with a generous portion of whipped cream topped with bits of rose petals and pistachios. The tables are self-seating so you can choose to dine inside or outdoors. ![]() ![]() You pay at the counter and the cashier will give you a number. I opted for the Utopia café latte and the Olympian yogurt parfait. They offer omelettes, sandwiches, yogurt parfaits, pastries, desserts, espresso based drinks, and salads. The café is reminiscent of those Parisian cafes you wander into while traipsing along the banks of the Seine. There’s a British red phone booth outside with love-locks adorning the surrounding low fence. The café has indoor and outdoor seating which is done in black and. The café is located at the District right by the Union Market. Utopia European Caffe had been on my radar for a while now with the various photos on IG and Yelp.
